HOME-WORKSHOP TIPS AND HINTS

workbench
1) HANDY BENCH  Very simple and easy to build. I used a 32" x 32"sheet of 1/2" plywood. Simply screw on two pieces of 2" x 2" timber each side (for extra rigidity) and a piece of 3" x 2" down the middle. Clamp the middle piece in your Workmate....instant bench. I find it ideal for working on engines as you can walk around it. You can take it outside, or even in the kitchen. The beauty of it is, it can be stored flat against the wall when not in use. I might bolt a small vice to this.
tool wall
(2) WALLBOARD Blindingly obvious, but have you got one? Just an 8' x 4' sheet of "Stirling Board" screwed to the wall. Two coats of white emulsion. I hang all the stuff I use the most on this. Buy a box of 2" screws (don't use nails, they come loose), and draw around your tools with a marker pen. You'll always know if an item's missing. You'll wonder why you never did this years ago!
pillar drill
(3) PILLAR DRILL Mine cost £25 NEW! Not exactly industrial quality, but 100 times better than a pistol drill. It's cast iron, and if you put too much pressure on it, the swivel plate bends. I could see it snapping eventually. Solution? A car Scissor-Jack. If you raise the table, simply wind the jack up. If you lower it, wind it down. Result....Rigid Table.Use plenty of oil when drilling, the bits will last 10 times longer!
vice
(4) DUAL BENCH VICES These vices cost @ £10 each new. They have a swivel base. I put a piece of tube between them before I bolted them to the bench. Extremely useful when sawing pipes. You can even clamp curved objects as they have the swivel facility.
